New Sofa

Somebody got a new sofa delivered this weekend!

IMG_0696
(Shit. That painting is not centered. The curtains should be hemmed. I hate posting my own pics. Shit. Reality is not always perfect or pretty.)

(This is a better picture of the sofa, and sadly this is not my living room. But I hate that coffee table and want to stomp my foot through it. So maybe it is ok that it is NOT my living room.)

When the delivery dudes showed up at my place (which was built in the 20's and has TEENY TINY DOORS), the lead guy said, "I don't know if this is going to fit in here!" And it was all I could do to not shout out, "That's what she said!" hahahhahaha.

Seriously though, I tossed and turned all night [er, make that all week] wondering if the delivery guys were going to be able to wiggle this sofa into the front door and through the tiny arched entry wall that leads to the living room without farking it up. It was a T-I-G-H-T fit, but there she blows.

Let me explain the crap paint color that you might or might not be able to see in the shitty shot above. It is a faded mint green -- BARFARONI -- and it runs throughout most of my place. I hate it. But I rent. And I have a cunt landlord that refused to repaint before I moved in, and she won't let me patch or paint the place on my own. So the 60's era hospital mint green shade remains. Side note: I pretty much want to take a machete to my focacta landlord every time I see her or think about her (we have had MANY ISSUES), so let me move past the thought of that twat right now before I get all wound up.

Anywhoooooooooo, these two furry fellas took one look at the new rich, dark, chocolate leather sofa with contrast stitching and started plotting and scheming as to how they could ruin it, just like they ruined the last two sofas.

IMG_0736
Peanut. Scheming. Plotting. Planning.

IMG_0721
Leo. What's for dinner.

IMG_0727
Peanut weighing his options. Maybe we should let Mom be happy for ONE day before we trash her new sofa. Maybe.

IMG_0726
Leo. We'll see about that. Somehow it is much more satisfying to slowly destroy furniture rather than just whittling away at cheap carpet-covered scratching posts from Petco. YAWN. What's for dinner?

IMG_0749

So I am pretty much throwing the layers on the new sofa in a mad effort to prevent problems.

I am guessing that you fellow pet-owners can relate to this unfortunate but necessary "layered" look with some of your furniture? Or perhaps your pets are better trained than my little monsters.

P.S. I have had my eye on a VERY EXPENSIVE LEATHER SOFA for several years now, but a) could not afford it; b) it never really goes on sale by more than a few hundred bucks off; and c) I could not justify purchasing something super expensive that my sweet kitties might end up destroying. So this sofa was the best looking and most sturdy looking leather sofa that I could find under $1000. Ikea has some alternatives to this, but I usually find that they build much of their furniture at 3/4 scale to save money, and many of their sofas have really cheap, spindly and wonky legs that drive me bonkers. More than you needed to know, right?

Love that sofa, and I get it. Just spent tons of money on cleaning the couch. In one week...puppy has peed on it, one kids spilled hot tea and the other grape juice. I told hubby we should get leather. It can be wiped clean, but so expensive!!

I'm with you on all of that... hell, my cats even look like your cats! My cats are sort of gentle on the furniture. We have one of those cardboard scratch pad things in a box, I rub catnip into it, and the cats get their scratching fix without destroying anything.

Great sofa! About IKEA - I think they would contest your theory on the basis that it's "European sizing" :-) And, I think you should paint - and simply repaint when you leave. What's the woman going to do if you actually improve the shape of the walls and then turn it back to the old colour at the end? Simply take a colour sample of it now (you might need to peel a tiny piece off the wall and have them create the paint colour) and then get going with the colour of your dreams. It will add some extra work and a bit of extra cost, but if you're going to stay in the place for a while it will be worth it.

That sofa looks great! Love it, but I'm not a fan of the coffee table either. I'll help you stomp on it ;)

Love it! And reality is never pretty or perfect but thats kinda why its special, and your house looks like it's pretty killer..ok stop glaring at me like that.

Your Landcunt sounds horrible. BUT how cute are your kitties?!

HAPPY SUNDAY!

I like your sofa. It's much better than my leather sectional. I don't know what kind of Martha Stewart moment I was having when I decided to purchase an off-white couch. Let's just say that it is now "off" but there will never again be anything white about it. Next time I'm getting brown or black.

Love the sofa! I know what you mean about comprimising style for your pets. My parrot takes great pride in poo-ing wherever she can, so i have to go for the layered look on my furniture too, so I can wash the sheets. xx

The sofa is so beautiful! And leave it to you to have the most brilliant cats....orange cats rock! I love them so and truly believe they are the superior beings of the feline world (and those with Siamese will vehemently disagree, but I stick to my theory!).

"That's what she said!"
You crack me up!
That is the Family Catchphrase.

If you go back into my blog to my story of Joe, you will see a picture of him on our sofa where he ALWAYS is.

"That's what she said"...bwahaha :)
I say you BETTER christen that sofa before your kitties. Get to it lady!!!
Yeppers i see...the curtains aren't even at the ends, there's a cord showing on the floor, the couch is crooked, etc...Lol {SHIT we're ALL human...LET IT BE}

LOVE IT!!! wayyyy better than RH's super expensive overpriced fabulous leather sofa. can you tell i'm bitter? lol. seriously great find! and the layers don't look bad either but i think it's the cats that complete the look.

Great sofa - glad it fit! Cute cats too! Agreed that it sucks to not be able to get the furniture you really want cause of animals but life isn't as fun without them so we have to live with it! Saves $ anyhow... :-)

The sofa is great & I can thoroughly relate to the little wonders playing havoc with anything that comes in the house. At least they're cute!!!

UGH. jels of your couch. and hey, your cats are cute!

Sher said...

Oh yes they will sharpen their claws on the corners LOL! Mind do that to the wicker furniture I have.

Felicia said...

Ooh, I love it! And your kitties are so cute!! Also, I'm so sick of renting I'm about to murder my upstairs neighbor AND my landlord. My parents were so right when they used to tell me I should have been more financially responsible back in college! I would totally have a house of my own by now.

Charlotte said...

My cat is a beast as well! Glad you got the couch through the doorway.

anotherfishinthesea said...

ha your rant about your landlord cracked me up. i've had some bad one, but sounds like you have the ultimate nightmare. love the new couch though!

Ela said...

Congrats on the newest addition to your home, hon! I loves it!!! I may be a little biased since that looks almost exactly like the first couch we bought and hearted so much. My parents also fell in love with it, so when S and I bought a sectional when we moved into our 2nd home, my mom asked if she and my dad could buy the brown leather couch from us...I tried just giving it to them but you know how parents are...

Another thing? Peanut is wayyy cute (as is Leo) but Peanut looks just like our cat Foof, who passed away. If he didn't have spots on his nose, I would swear that was a picture of our Foof. It hurt so bad when he died, I told S that I don't know if I can ever have another pet again.

On a brigther note, my parents have a cat and now our couch is in their home, their cat LJ is sooo good with it. Something about the leather I think...he sits on it but doesn't scratch at it at all. But anyway, don't listen to me and take the protection off...I'd hate for them to go at it.

Hope you had a great weekend, hon!!! Congrats again, it looks really lovely :)

Sweet Scorage of the badass mofo sofa!! It suits you!! And I love those rad curtains. I tote know what you mean about taking pics of your own pad, it never looks like those glamour decorating photos that we all know and love..hehe. they even photoshop rooms for gawd sakes these days..bahaha..whats next photoshopping kitty whiskers???
Your two fur babees are freaking CUTE. I LOVE me some ginger kitties! They look hilarious and you probably nailed it on the commentary. I hope to Gawd they leave this couch alone, its leather so maybe it will feel shitty on the ol' claws...hopefully.
Well enjoy the rest of your sundae..cause eep, its almost monday..blech,gag.

Jenni said...

Oh very, very cute. It looks modern, but not so much that it's out of place. Cute, Cute, Cute!

looks fabulous! haha our sofa is totally covered with towels for the cat!

Mmmm...leathuh.

Hello sweet kitties - leave Mama's sofa alone, please.

one little simitopian said...

First let me giggle at that anonymous comment up there. hehehehe. Ok, i'm done.
Nice shiny black lounge! Ohhh yes,Kitties are destructive little shits. I don't have one at the moment, but my daughter is just as bad. My poor lounge has been vomited on,"painted" with milk/various foodstuffs, scribbled on, and peed on. And that's just me! haha, just kidding. I don't drink milk.
As a renter myself i can understand the decoration woes. We have these ugly blinds that i'd love to replace, but can't. Also, I love to hang art around the place, but there is ONE solitary wall hook in the entire house. *sadface*
I haven't actually met my landlord, as we rent through the real estate agency, but luckily it seems pretty cool so far. I've had some shockers though,(I probably already told you about the "dead dog" incident..) so i feel for you!
I hope your kitties give you at least a week of scratch-free couch enjoyment!

Shelley said...

I totally heart your new sofa! I think it looks pretty close to the one you want! Haha Barfaroni! And your kitties are seriously just too f-ing cute! Thanks for the comment! Things got better and then they got waaaaay worse, but I think its all good now.

LOOOOOVVEE!!! LEO!! PEANUT! BE MINE your gorgeous gorgeous fuffy devils!! *oh hell - I'm hyperventilating now! Caaalm down lady!* Sigh - sorry what was it you asked? Oh yes!! Pussy cats and furniture - if it makes you feel any better my Dad's cat Harry has totally destroyed (and I mean major league destroyed an entire lounge set: two armchairs and a sofa - really quite amazing!) so - don't feel bad about your two gods of love there - they are normal felines. Love, love the sofa!!

I think your sofa is perfection!! And I don't think the wall color is that bad. Besides, the gorgeous sofa and gorgeous wood floors are what you notice first in the room!

We have kitties also (two who like to scratch things), and the mostly stay away from the furniture. We leave kitty scratch posts and toys in different parts of the house, and they're actually pretty good about using those.

Enjoy the pretty new furniture!!

seriously i love it!!! and the color is AMAZING...

your description of your landlord made me almost spew coffee through my nose. she is an IDIOT for not allowing you to paint yourself, which i'm sure would help the value of the place ANYWAYS once you leave.
yes, i feel your pain as an animal owner that things around the house are never in their perfected state. i have fur tumbleweed right now and no motivation to clean it up. ugh.

Marjorie said...

I love LOVE love that sofa...and the curtains...and artwork...and all of the protective kitty-proof layers. And "that's what she said," I love you for saying that. I catch myself about to say it at work all the time, but I keep it in because it's probably not appropriate.

creative kerfuffle said...

love love the sofa. as for the picture being off center? just scooch the sofa to the right a tad and the picture is centered : ) i love the curtains.
now, on to the pets--your kitties are sooooo pretty!
we have pet issues here too. the last two sofas we had ended up shredded and the hubs' recliner has seen better days. however, we've discovered they don't/can't claw the furniture in the den because it's that microfiber stuff. we've not had leather before but i thought they wouldn't be able to shred that either--i am wrong on this? the dogs just leave hair everyone and one of the dogs licks the couch. a lot. i don't know why. it's weird and gross to sit in a wet spot of dog slobber.

ticklishfromadistance said...

Perfect, sweet. Love it. Love kitty witty the most.

Iva said...

I have no idea where to start!! ummm the kitties...the sofa...the landlord.... hmmm

ok! got it!!

YOUR CATS ARE FANTASTIC!!!! Leo and Peanut are two rad cats! What did Leo end up having for dinner? He is awesome! Kinda thinking what I am thinking now..at 8:17AM!! lol...can I borrow them? For fun, I can cat-sit sometimes?! Yes, Leo, I promise to give you lots of dinner!

So glad it fit! I LOVE IT!! Also, you can't really see the faded mint green...I'm sorry about that landlord SHHHEEEH!! Your place looks fabulous! Lame landlord or not, I'm loving it! I can't stop looking at your mosaic coffee table! UMMM WAY AWESOME!! It must have some seriously awesome design on it!

fabulous post!

Love the sofa... I deal with the same issue. I have to flip cushions (one side is for company and the otherside is for miss ruby and her dirty paws.

Liz said...

I would have shouted THATS WHAT SHE SAID in an instant. But that's because I'm wildly inappropriate :)

And that sofa rules. Good choice!

Kellie said...

Love it! And your kittehs are so cute! :) Also, we had mint green in our stairway going to our basement and our entire basement. We have repainted the stairway but haven't gotten around to the basement. Who in their right minds ever thought that color would look good? Ew.

hope505 said...

*hahaha!* @ "layers"...for the first time since I've had him, my amazing cat had tummy trouble Friday night/Saturday moning and had a barftastic adventure in, like, every room in the house. Yeah, he hit up the sofa, too.

Sofa and cat pics are awesome, don't be shy about posting!

Also, with the "that's what she said" line - I see you and I also have roughly the same maturity level.

Rock ON.

You totally deserve the best one and this one is fabulous! Even though we love our cats, sometimes I want to kick them for scratching in something. I heard if you clean the leather with a leather cleaner the cats will be turned off by the smell. Just a thought but I hope it stays new looking for a long long time!

Bloom where your are planted!

...and your apartment is a nice start.

Either:
1)make some subtle brush strokes of Benjamin Moore Ultra White/eggshell. ...or...
2)decide to drink in the mint ice cream hue as if it were your choice.
But, no complaining...
this is you space; own it.

I love your new sofa!! And boy can I relate... fucking George finds ways to destroy furniture and I dread buying new couches (we need new ones) because I know he's going to mess them up :) Twice I've caught him bitting the legs of the dinning room table out of sheer boredom.

God Bless. :)

My life is insane right now, and I'm very late getting to this post. This wonderful post. This wonderful getting to know you better post.
I love the sofa, but I love the cats too, so the layered look, I guess I'm loving that too. I've had pets that destroyed my furniture, so I can relate.
I'm sorry to hear things are rough with your landlady, that's a drag. At least now you can relax with your cats on your new sofa. Hugs. xo d

your cats are so beautiful. nice sofa. i remember those mint green walls, lol. is that painting a work of yours? :)

Pyzahn said...

Hi hi hi...obviously I've been off the blogroll and have missed catching up on your life. I hope this means you are settling happily into a bright new world (mint green walls aside).

Lovely sofa, beautiful cats. I am such a sucker for orange tabbies.

Be of good cheer, my dear.

The Cottage Cheese said...

Love the new sofa, and your kitties are such beauties! My last dog was allowed on the couch and bed, but of the two dogs I have now, only one even likes to be up on the furniture. And that's only an occasional thing. Unfortuntately, this isn't because I have a fab sofa (I hate my couch), but because my husband doesn't appreciate a dog snuggle as much as I do.

Your landlord must be a little crazy for not allowing you to paint the mint green walls.

me melodia said...

First of all, Leo is such a stud.
I can see he's plotting to start destroying the couch very innocently. Little scuff here, tiny hole there. Then one night you'll wake up to the sound of leather being trashed and plucked and torn to shreads under their tiny nail daggers. Or maybe I'm just projecting. My Charlotte went nuts on my $1400 leather sectional. We became slaves to draping throws and pillows. Now I use "softpaws" those little nail condoms.

I hear ya with the landlord woes. I wanted to punch mine in the neck.
I'm pleased to hear your treating your self to new furniture and goodies.

Take care droll!

Kim said...

Beautiful new sofa you smart girl. And those are two of the cutest cats I've EVER seen. I love their little faces!!! Our cat Crash is close to five or six years old and still is a brat around the furniture. He's also a big fan of sharpening his claws on the carpet on the stairs. Between the cat and the kid we'll never have nice things:(

K @ Blog Goggles said...

Ok, a couple things.

1. What is focacta?

2. At least you have curtains. My apt is wall-to-wall windows with no curtains. And, yes, my neighbors include other apartments, restaurants, businesses, etc - all of whom can look straight into my living room. And, yes, I'm too lazy to put on clothes most of the time, so I'm sure 98% of them have seen me half-nude.

3. Your kitties are adorbs.

4. Landlords suck. Why the f won't they put up curtains?

5. That's an awesome couch. When I moved to HK and had to buy furniture, I went to Ikea (b/c I'm broke and cheap) and bought the cheapest one. It looks like crap, but most of my apt does, so it really is just fitting into the theme.

I'm kinda drunk... can you tell?

Prairie Chicken... said...

when I got a really gorgeous couch I wrapped it in sheets and only took the sheets off when I was home and then gaurded my couch with a water bottle. Took about a month but my cats learned not scratch it.
The compromise was getting a coffee table that they use as a scratching post instead ;)

Punkinhead said...

There's nothing cuter than orange cats. Period.

I took the plunge and got some slipcovers for my two un-matchey sofas recently, and the VERY NEXT DAY, one of them had pulls in it from kitties playing... dammit.
