Success

Are you ever perplexed by the success of others? I understand why The Beatles, The Who, and The Rolling Stones have enjoyed such lasting success. And I can KIND OF understand why Aerosmith has enjoyed so much success, even though they haven't released a good album since the 70's. But Bon Jovi? Have you ever listened to a Bon Jovi album? Back when I was in high school I bought the Slippery When Wet cassette (ha!) because Jon Bon Jovi was just so cute. I tried to like that music. I really tried. But even at 16 years old I knew Bon Jovi was a joke and tossed that clunker cassette in the trash. But 20+ years later Bon Jovi is plugging along and making mad cash without my adoration. Go figure.

P.S. Clearly I realize that taste is subjective. If you are a Bon Jovi fan, go ahead and unleash on me. And while I am offending folks, let me add that I cannot understand how U2 has ever been a success AT ALL. If you want to know more bands that I cannot stand, click here and here.

I don't get the whole Bon Jovi thing either. I didn't even really like them in the 80's. Now I love U2 (but only the old stuff...Joshua Tree was the last U2 CD I bought). I think their old music was powerful and had a message. Bono kicked ass back then. But then I feel they sold out. I hate their new stuff...

LOL on your hated bands! Air Supply...good lord...awful!

How can you discount the brilliance of Bon Jovi and claim that The Beatles are popular for good reason? There's nothing particularly great about The Beatles that Hootie and the Blowfish didn't nail as well. It is all sort of the same kind of pop music. I don't really like any of it since I'm not 12 years old or a girl...

Hmmm... Bon Jovi? I don't think one way or the other about them. I don't think they are horrible but I'm also not a fan.

I used to love U2. Now? I feel kind of the same way I feel about Bon Jovi. Don't really care.

WHAT?! I LOVE BON JOVI!!! didn't you watch the amazing selection od songs on american idol's bon jovi night a couple years ago?!

haha. to each is own...but i'm DEFINITELY with you on U2. i don't get it. yea he's irish. that's cool but uhhhh...that's it.

Ya, I'm with you...although I have shitty taste in music, or at least I think I do. Haha. None of the songs I like are related or like each other, it's weird. I'm an odd brownie.

well as a major U2 fan even i say the latest album stinks. but i am completely and totally in love with bono...so there. he puts his money where his mouth is - a lot people don't. as for bon jovi, this band has always run on the man's looks.

LOL yeah... with you on Bon Jovi!

I'm with you on Bon Jovi. I bought that same album (also on cassette.. haha) and I think my only motivation was because I had a secret gal crush on Jon. When I first heard his voice, I was appalled... I still don't think he can sing and the lyrics are embarrassing. AND he's a bad actor. That said, I'm pretty harsh anyway. Other bands I hate that aren't on your list are Green Day (why sing with a British accent if you're not British) and Linkin Park (I just find them annoying) to name a few. And I also think Chris Cornell should stop doing what he's doing right now, because a guy with that voice shouldn't be doing pseudo hip-hop and ruining the legacy that is Soundgarden.

Happy Monday!

you're my hero!! i could never figure how the guy even classify as rocker. he's only done ballads! or maybe that's all i came across...

and i don't like you U2 either...but honnestly sometimes when you say it, people give you really really bad looks. like you've just said F off to their gran!

i need to check out your list but i hope Maroon 5 is one it...

Meh, I'm not a big fan of Bon Jovi. That steel cowboy song is o.k. though.
I'm a Bob Dylan kind of a girl.

Oh, I loved Slippery When Wet back in the day. But I don't get why they are still making "music".

erm, I'm a CRAZY bon jovi fan..loved them since I was a teenager (: But sadly I'm still stuck on their older albums..not soo much a fan of their newer music making! xo

've never liked Bon Jovi but U2 on the other hand, does strike my fancy...at least some of the stuff. I'm not crazy about all the political stuff that Bono throws out there (I'll be blasted for that one) as I am not a bleeding liberal. Some people should just retire...my feelings on Bon Jovi.

I was actually a big fan of Bon Jovi back in the 80's. I listened to them every single day and night. I haven't really listened to them for years. It does surprise me that they are still around.

Someone stab Stevie Nicks when she's spinning around onstage (she won't see it coming).

Jovi sucks wet ass, and not in a good way.

There are so few that I believe can even sing or perform, so I hear you roar sistah!

Toothfairy said...

well, I don't like all of the bands above, except for a few songs of some of them... but I think it's really a matter of taste as I just can't seem to understand/appreciate this type of music!

seriously, will you marry me? its only weird if you make it weird!! HA! but i friggin HATE u2....biggest piles of crap for music ever. i'd rather jab myself in the eye with a dull pencil....repeatedly...than listen to their music... and bon jovi..at least he was easy on the eyes...

If you grew up in New Jersey, like me, it is mandatory that you like at least five key Bon Jovi songs. I'm just obeying the law, my friend.

Separately I saw your comment on Sher's blog and just wanna say BUY YOUR OWN JEWELRY! You'll get better stuff that way, for sure ;-)

Hanako66 said...

old bon jovi songs are a blast to sing at karaoke, but I agree, not the best stuff. I have seen the who and the stones live and I totally get it:) and who can argue with the beatles??!!

When Bon Jovi had big hair he looked like a chick. I figured that his fame came from lesbians and the men who love them ;)

I think sometimes the shallow artists still make it through... Bon Jovi and U2 (actually, I rather like U2 and don't think they are too shallow) get the pop fans, people who just want to bop along to life, and I get that, sometimes. Not everyone can drum like John Bonham or write lyrics like Tori Amos.

What confuses me is when someone like, oh, say, PARIS HILTON makes it as a singer. Then I have a serious WTF moment, because unlike Bon Jovi or U2, I don't even think she knows what music IS.

As for actors, don't get me started on the mystery that is Megan Fox or the Olsen twins.

anotherfishinthesea said...

Ha this made me laugh... I suppose he has a certain appeal to some? I did see a special on Bon Jovi a few weeks ago. I didn't watch the whole thing though, I guess not being super into him meant I just wasn't intrigued enough.

I am with what Phoenix though, Bon Jovi is definitely less of a WTF than some other "artists" out there.

Clorivak said...

YUCK!!! I can't stand the Jovi. His name is gross too..bon jovi, reminds me of stinky anchovies or privates.
his music makes me dry heave and clear a room..I literally will disappear in a puff of smoke if his music starts playing. it hurts my brain.

U2...I'll admit to liking a couple songs...but I find I'm sick of the "epic" songs they keep trying to put out. And Bono seems to act so holier than thou..blech.

love the list..you nailed it, there was not one band that I liked on it.

Kaz said...

There are a couple of bands on your list that I kinda like. And I do like U2...well some of their stuff

My music taste is, shall we say, eclectic. Yes, let's just say that and leave it at that. It would be the nicest thing to do :-)

Hmm, I'm kinda middle of the road on Bon Jovi. I've seen them in concert a few times and it was fun. But it's not like I'm gonna be telling my kids about how lucky mama was to have seen them. Ya know? Meh. :)

Felicia|DaLipstickBandit said...

i don't get it either..no worries! lol

Phoenix said...

Yeah, someday somebody is gonna have to explain Thomas Kinkade's success to me too :)

I'm with you about U2. And when I heard he flew his hat from London to Italy -- First Class -- well that just about summed them up for me.

I have tried numerous times to love U2...can't get into it. Bon Jovi is the same shite over and over again.

There are many things in the world that make me shake my head in terms of how they became so popular...Paris Hilton, The Kardashians, Jon and Kate and their 8 exploited kids, Kenny G...

P.S. I love your new header pic!!!

TheBeautyFile said...

You're out of your mind CRAZY! I have loved U2 for eternity. Bono could kill someone and I would still be obsessed with him.

blueviolet said...

Thank you. I swear I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I just don't understand the love, at all. I have friends my age who rush to the Bonjovi concerts with stars in their eyes. What am I not seeing?

Laura said...

I hear ya over and over! Bon Jovi just seemed to age really well like a fine wine. Would I have believed that in the 90's nah! Miss ya drollgirl....

E said...

I can never take Bon Jovi seriously and I'm basing this solely on the lyrics of "Wanted Dead or Alive." He is Bret Michaels with hair, nothing more.

diane said...

Drolly, I just gave you an award. You deserve it, take it. xo d

It's such a mystery, isn't it? I don't have anything against Bon Jovi (they're just a hair band no?) per say but I know where of you come. Actaully, I saw that U2 were on your list and I saw red because Bono has to be my number one most unfavourite man in the entire cosmos and if I saw him coming down the street I don't know what I'd do. Such a waggy finger hypocrit pompous do nothing sanctimonious you know what!!! But that has nothing to do with their music which I believe is pretty ordinary to say the least - a lot less objectionable than Bono himself.

Iva said...

haha...I'd never 'unleash' on you. I love honesty...I think I kinda did like Bon Jovi, but just a few songs, long ago. Totally behind you on the U2 thing though. lol!

teeheee, is it weird I always read your labels too? Love them! LOL HILARIOUS!

UHH...yeah never been a fan of Bon Jovi..and just to let you know i was gonna say BJ for short...but saying "never been a fan of BJ" didnt seem appropriate even though i just said it...i know im a fool hahahahaha

i sometimes ponder success in others and sometimes envious...but uhh yeah i forgot we're talking about Bjovi. LOL

p.s. hubs had lunch with slayer...well they're like homies.. talk about me being jealous. mmhmm

used to like bon jovi in the 80's then they just keep on making same songs and music boring!

Miss Sofia said...

Yeah, I totally get your point! Jon Bon Jovi is kind of cute, though. But the music is just... Bad. Not hideous, just bad. I enjoy It's My Life, but it's not a good song.

Ela said...

He's kinda cute though...sorry does that even matter?

oh my. how this post tickled me. i'm ashamed to say i used to enjoy dancing to BJ's cheesy 'rock' songs. bleh! there was a time in my life i liked DY's High Enough and Scorpions' Wind of Change and a whole lot more. yes, that's me *nods*

TERI REES WANG said...

Oh, I was totally into Bon Jovi..!!!
I burned that tape out!
..with a 'big'O-sarcastic-smile' on my face, until someone labeled me a "Rocker" and expected me to take it as a compliment. Then I was done.
I thought it was a small
'laugh-at-our-Self-while-we-bang-our -heads-while-we-try-and-drive' club, not a join the cult concession.

And I don-know-nothin-bout-no U2 neither.

I need a beat and a heavy base.

You had me at Bon Jovi, but you lost me at U2. (At least if you're referring to their pre-zooTV stuff...)

Not a fan of them or U2 either! But last time I was in ny we went to this little dive bar near Brooklyn and when a Bon Jovi song came on the jukebox the bartender girl got this serious and deep expression on her face and I could see her nodding her head to it like she was listening to the most profound thing in the world and since then I give respect. The really-funny-to-me lyrics apparently touch a chord for some.

Sorry - as an aside to the link about your worst songs -- Hootie and the Blowfish was the first CD i ever bought. First cassette was Do The Bartman by The Simpsons.

Take from that what you will. U2 succcksss. But the bogan in me LOVES all those horrible Bon Jovi songs. BJ!

America has the worst taste in music!! Not a huge fan of U2!
Let's be better friends, seriously. We have too much in common!

Pretty Little World said...

I don't get this either, though I suspect it has more to do with the way that Bon Jovi looks as compared to how the band sounds. I don't get U2 at all either -- I always just cringe a little when their music comes on.

I feel this way about The Who also -- can't people hear that the stuff they're making now is bad? Really bad.

i don't HATE bon jovi, but i never really jumped on their bandwagon. i looked over your other list (think i'd read it before) and really the only one on that i'd have to disagree w/ is chicago. well, and u2. some of it.

LOL!!

Bon Jovi was the 1st CD *my Sister* bought!!

Imagine the misery!! Ha!
(of the joy of hearing it over. and over. and over again in her brand new CD-player hi-fi tower!! /sigh/)

He looked cute in Ally McBeal and some other 'chick flics' though!
(I even had him on my Maths notebook! With the perm! - That was before Sis bought the CD though!!)

But then again, the first cassette I bought was Kylie!! Kill me!! :)
/I didn't even know any of her songs, just that duet with Jason & she looked good in Bravo! - German teen magazine!)
*All kinds of wrong*!!!!

PS Sorry I seem to sigh a lot these days - maybe need to stop posting silly coments!! /sigh/ lol!
