Constipated Cat, Part Deux

leo angry leo

Constipated Cat, Part doo doo. Ugh. My poor kitty Leo. He's been having poop problems. Click here for the "back" story.

The laxative (lactulose) the vet gave Leo on Saturday didn't really do all that much. A few small poops here and there over the weekend, but not the avalanche of crap we were hoping for (?!). Sigh.

I took Leo back to the vet this morning for a follow up visit, and the vet said he would have to give my poor furious, angry, petrified and shaking cat an ENEMA. FUCK. Neither the vet, nor me, nor my kitty Leo thought that would be any fun, and I am sure it wasn't.

The dastardly deed was done, and the vet told me that lots of messy "chocolate pudding type stuff" came out of my darling's derriere. UGH UGH UGH!!! They let me look at a before and after set of x-rays [the proof is in the pudding, so to speak] to show me how much poop was cleared out. GROSS. Blood tests came back looking good, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is the end of this particular problem. But I will be adding FortiFlora to Leo's food, as well as a prescription for cisapride, plus a bit of canned pumpkin to each meal he eats, and I hope his poop woes are over.

And, just FYI, the vet said that many big cats have trouble pooping, particularly as they get older. Leo is eleven years old, he is 14 lbs (down from 18, and I swear he used to be even bigger than that), so I guess it is time for his health to decline a bit. But, I am going to do my best for him and hope he gets better. And I hope that Leo forgives me for today, which must have been the worst day of his life.

P.S. Vet bill #1 was $351.75. Vet bill #2 was $395.00. Suddenly I think my summer vacation plans might need to be downscaled or aborted altogether. :[ But whaddya gonna do. Gotta take care of the fur friends. :]

Wow, I don't know who got the worse end of the deal ... you or Leo! Ouch on both parts - the enema AND the bill!

Good thing Leo's okay, though. I was wondering about him.

PS - totally unrelated, but can I just say thank you for spelling "deux" properly? You don't know how much it bugs me when I see someone write "part duex." :)

Ewwww...a kitty enema?!?! I had no idea they did that for cats! Ugh...at least you didn't have to administer it yourself!

Thank goodness that the bloodwork came out well!

P.S. The word verification was "dines". Couldn't help but think about all the pumpkin Leo's going to dine on soon.

Glad to hear Leo's doing better. And I feel your pain with the vet bills. We used to joke that we put all our money in the bank of veterinary medicine. But hey - you can't take it with you, right?

oh Leo. Poor Leo. Poor Drollgirl. What a mess...in every sense of the word. {although I happen to think 'Messy' is a good thing. horrid joke HORRID!} I am so sorry. I am glad though that Leo is ok, generally speaking. Getting older isn't any fun for any of us, even our furry buddies...and they really need our help to get better. He's very lucky to call you mama, and I am sure you are very proud are your big kitty! He is a handsome one! Its funny we live in Cali and so many people come to vacation here...and yet we go elsewhere! LOL. I think you'll have a great vacation...whether you scale down a bit or change it for even something short but sweet!

Oh Lord!!! I'm so glad he's doing ok now. I really hope it's the end of it too. If you can't tell, I'm a cat lover. If my building allowed pets I would probably have 2837938745 of them.

Hope the situation is getting better for both of you. You certainly need a vacation for yourself.

Aah, Honey!!!

....so once upon a time, in a hair salon in Beverly Hills...

Melissa Gilbert was sharing how her little baby boy had not pooped in 3 days!...

The doctor told her to take a thermometer up his tiny "cudo", and wiggle it around a bit, 'cause sometimes you just need to break the seal.
She did, and was shocked when she say a big 'ol man size poop snake right out of her sweet baby boy.

All is well that ends well.

I feel ya lady. I have a fur baby with heart issues and the vet bills are something else. I hope your little guy is feeling better!

Hopefully his poop is here to stay...I can't believe I am cheering on animal poop. I have a dog though, so I will now appreciate his little "deposits" back to nature.

Aren't vets expensive!!! Ugh! I paid 300 for my dog to have has ankle wrapped for an "sprang" ankle! If I would have known that, he would have shaken that sh*t off like I do!

Oh no! I can't imagine being that uncomfortable for so long. That is mighty expensive. Who knew?

Oh poor Leo...poor drollgirl's wallet :( But thankfully the kitty is better...I am sure it felt good to get all that crap out. And canned pumpkin is awesome...I give it to my doggies!

Poor Leo kitty, but I am glad that he's all cleaned out. Although it was a heinous day, I'm sure he'll feel better once the memory of the trauma wears off. And gd, vets are expensive out there! I guess it's the X-rays. I'm hoping my Molly girl's surgery won't cost a fortune (it helps that my vet is my childhood best friend, who slips me a 10% discount whenever she can). But yes, our furry kids are definitely worth it.

I was just discussing rabbit constipation with taffetadarlings recently!

Glad kitteh is feeling better.

Poor Leo! My dog (Leo) has had similar problems in the past. He's only 2, so maybe it's all in the name :)

Vet bills are killer.

Aww poor little guy! He MUST be feeling better though now!
"the proof is in the pudding" hehehe
Oh crap, that is one nasty vet bill :( But these are the things we do for the ones we love! You're a good mum ;)

poor little bugger. It probably was the worst day of his life, but luckily he probably won't remember the dastardly deed.

Hope that they got the "bulk" of it out of the poor baby and that he will be doing better soon.

Krystal said...

awww poor cat!! did you try looking online for natural stuff? then maybe you can bypass that vet bill :( our dog gets ear infections and we found a homemade formula online!

Poor, poor Leo & poor you & poor your purse! Sounds like a silly question, but is he drinking enough? Aloe vera for pets can often help (mix it with the wet food). Having nearly fainted several times when being confronted with the vet bill has made us a bit of self-taught cat health experts.

holy crap! did the vet say what caused poor leo to get bound up? imagine the relief he must have felt getting all of that out though--even if it was via enema.

Down and Out Chic said...

ugh, the vet bills make me cringe. i really do hope leo gets over his difficulties.

one time, bella ate a whole bag of RAW brown rice. you know what they say about not feeding rice to birds? yeah, it does kill them. bella's poor tummy was HUGE and i had to take her to emergency vet. it was horrible and she pooed raw rice for days. dear god. our furry friends are quite the challenge sometimes.

OMG "chocolate pudding type stuff" -- poor Leo. My little Cass had bladder stones a few years ago. Horrible what our wee ones go through. But she's all better as I'm sure Leo will be. A relief (literally)! XO

DAMMIT Vets charge too much but holy shit it's worth it when it comes to your fur babies...but DAMN. I hate it. I am so glad he is doing better...but holy schmuck that's crazy about the enema business...hahah, that's a new one. Poor Leo...He must be glad that nightmare is over, how humiliating..hahaha.
It's over....and hope you get a killer raise or win some money or something hehe to make up for you vacay money being used up.

omg your poor sweet kitty!! I'm glad it was "just" poo and not some worse blockage...it IS a boatload of money but you know "it's only money" and your cat is your friend! You did good!

I can't imagine him going back after the second time. Poor Leo!
It's pricey but our fur friends are worth it

Hope Leo feels better soon. My cat Maddie is having some trouble with realizing the cat box isn't in the kitchen.

Glad Leo is slightly lighter, sorry about your lighter pocketbook though. He should definitely be mixing you some cocktails this summer if you have to settle for lounging at home!

:(

So sorry Leo was backed up. One of my kitties had this same problem a while back. The laxatives luckily worked for him... but he's had his fair share of other problems that have cost me an arm and a leg. Like you said... whatcha gonna do? They're my family.

And quick funny story... about poop. Since we're on the topic. Before my grandma passed away, she was a frequent guest at our local hospital. There was always something going on- some more serious than other things. So on one occasion, I was the one to rush her in when she was having stomach pains, convinced "this was it." The doctors did xrays and my dad met me there, beating my mom to the hospital (this was my mom's mom). By the time my mom got to the hospital, my dad and I had had time to talk to the doc and look at the xrays. My mom was in a panic when she arrived, and couldn't stop asking, "What's wrong? What's wrong." My dad felt the need to ease the tension of the situation a bit, so in his perfectly charming way, he looked at my mom and said, "Well, it looks like your mom is full of shit." Hahaha.... and it was a true statement. She was just all constipated. Okay, that wasn't so short was it? And maybe you had to be there. Anyway... it was pretty funny at the time. And I'll shut up now.

Glad Leo's okay... now I'm really going.

Aw gosh, poor Leo. Oh, poor poor Leo. How is he now???

Our lil guy had to pee out kidney stones once. It was awful. I'm thinking this is just as bad.

Oh hon, is it too late to get pet insurance? Not sure if there'e an age limit...we never got around to it, he was too sick by the time we thought of it and didn't qualify.

I hope he's been doing better since.

Gosh. Are you going to start feeding him prunes? It is outrageous how much that shit costs (pun intended). I do that sort of crap multiple times every day at my work (prescribe laxatives and enemas, not be constipated, nor administer them personally) and my patients don't pay a dime (or a ten cent coin, as we would call it here). And they are human people!

On a slightly unrelated note, it would just seem wrong to be paying someone to stick their digit up your butt, wouldn't it? I guess that's what Americans have to do with the privatised health system. At least I'm being paid when I have to do it!
