Risk Aversion

fried_chicken430x300

Do you chomp down on fried chicken with utter abandon? Without even LOOKING at it? Or does the fear of biting into a vein or a rubbery cartilage globule cause you to pull at the chicken and inspect each bite before putting it into your mouth?

You can probably guess where I stand on this issue.

Have to look, always. One time of having that cartilage shit in your mouth and fried chicken can be ruined for life. Always play it safe and look.

Once in a while I can get my brain to shut up long enough to enjoy a leg... but yeah... fucking gross man.

Rita/Fighting Off Frumpy said...

OMG. That's why I only eat white meat ... it seems to be safer, at least in my mind.

The other night my husband was eating a fried chicken leg that we got at a deli. After he'd already taken a couple of bites he looked at the leg and it was, like, RED inside ... so frickin' gross ...

TAKE IT ALL ! The whole veiny thing !!!!

We ARE talking about CHICKEN, right ?

Ew- I don't eat fried chicken- I thought that was just a southern thing.
When we grill- I make breast for people and drum sticks with all the skin cut off for monkeys- Let them bite in blindly.

dont know if i could ever eat fried chicken on the bone, its the veins part that has me creeped out.

girlunwinding said...

yeah, I eat boneless chicken breast and even then I make sure every last piece of that white facia and yellow fat is off before cooking it and when eating out, I don't eat the outskirts of it for that reason. I HATE FAT!!!

I confess, I so enjoy chicken, but I tend to cook organic chicken only. Also, I do not fry chicken; I slow cook as one does in the West Indies. With fried chicken one runs the risk of it being undercooked...

ewww... no chicken for me! But if I never ever eat a chicken wing you can bet it was inspected thoroughly

on the rare occassion I eat it, I inspect every little bite!

Phoenix said...

I really, REALLY try not to inspect every little bite.

You're making that difficult with this post, you realize that, right?? ;)

Trixie said...

I don't eat cow and I don't eat pig and I don't eat chicken on a bone or chicken with a skin and if I do eat chicken whether it's processed lunch meat or a dinosaur nugget, I inspect the shit out of it. It's virtually inedible after I get done dissecting and removing bits and blobs that look suspicious. My lunch meat is invariably ripped into pieces so I can remove red blood looking bits. And I never eat KFC because that shit ALWAYS has blood blisters in it. Now I'm going to go vomit. Thank you

I don't eat fried chicken. I hardly eat chicken actually. I know what kind of 'roids they pump into those things to make the chickens as large as they are when they're murdered.

TERI REES WANG said...

I don't eat chicken.

..I only eat the skin.

Cheers!

Christiejolu said...

I pull it apart with my fingers first...All the nasty stuff gets left in the plate...

Lorena said...

I eat chicken. Boneless chicken. No bone. No skin.
I like to pretend it's a fruit. If I give it too much thought I cannot eat it.

Char said...

girl please....i'm from the south.

chomp it!

L.A. Daze said...

I pull it apart. My brother makes fun of me, but having a nasty vein or piece of fat or cartilage in my mouth will certainly cause me to throw up.

yyyyeeeaaahh...this is why we have 'chicken nuggets' and 'popcorn chicken' and all those little pre-inspected, pre-boned and de-gristled bits of safe chicken that you can eat without being nervous! *haha! That's my solution. Otherwise, yep. I can't do it. I "finish" a piece of chicken and whoever I'm with is like..."what the hell? what did you do to that?" *HAA!

Dancing Branflake said...

Isn't that why they invented chicken nuggets? But I guess with the bone you know it's really chicken.

Dancing Branflake said...

My general rule is to not eat animals in the shape they were alive in.

diane said...

3 words: fried chicken breast.

Kristine said...

I haven't eaten chicken in years but I still love the smell of KFC, love it. I used to fantasize about ordering just a bucket of skin. Yum. Even when I was a meat eater I could never eat anything attached to the bone. My mom loves to munch on cartilage when she eats ribs. It is a horror show.

omg now i can't eat chicken. well, i don't eat drumsticks ever. or hot dogs.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Anything deep fried is going in my mouth and in my stomach at first sight, but non-fried chicken scares me. I never buy it and I never cook it. I can't really talk though because I eat Chicken McNuggets...

K.Line said...

Oh, I am SO fussy about chicken. And SO fussy about fried things. This is not my scene. I'm with you on this one.

Mo said...

Last night we ate bbq'd chicken legs and I had to inspect every bite and then try not to think about what I was eating half the time for fear of a gag reflex...sometimes I think it's time to kick the habit again...

Missy said...

I definitely pick it apart and eat only if I did not find anything gross. Meat of the bone is not pretty!

blueviolet said...

No freakin' way. I look at every single little bit so as not to get any veins or nastiness anywhere near me!

Fragrant Liar said...

I pretty much just go at it. If I give it any thought at all, I won't eat it. My conscience, which I beat into submission on protein matters, wants me to become a vegetarian. One of these days, I'm sure she will have her way. Meantime, la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la . . .

Raez said...

neither! KFC has got me traumatized from ever eating fried chicken ever again...my mom used to work there and told me horror stories...you dont wanna know!

Alisa said...

Because of the veins or a rubbery cartilage globule, I inspect each morsel. In fact there are too many of those unsavory things in the chicken drumstick that I only eat the breast meat.

My son inspects his chicken. He will put a piece on his fork and look at it, all sides, before he eats it. My husband looks at me and shakes his head.

Caitlin said...

For that very reason, I do not eat chicken on the bone (generally). And when i do, I pick it to death.

Lynn said...

I only eat the breast. Very carefully.

Chic 'n Cheap Living said...

Now you got me thinking. I usually just eat away and inspect a bit.

Gabbi said...

Funny you should write about this, by nature... I'm a biter without a care, but yesterday I had a chicken wrap at a rather expensive little shop near work for lunch (wanted to eat something good on a messed up Monday) and there was blood on/in my chicken! Soooooo gross!! Never going there again, and next time I eat the fried variety, I'll be watching where I chomp just because of this post... that and the blood in the wrap. Nasty.

Alicia said...

neither! i'm not a fried chicken eater at all....blech....BUT i tend to inspect every bite of my food!

Jennifer DeDonato said...

Yuck...don't like to think about it.

Adiya said...

Ooopsy!! I chomp down on it *can't watch*

i do look before i chomp down on it. i've heard of people realising the chix was a rat. beat that.

Keith said...

I'm in the South so I eat a lot of fried chicken. I don't really think about biting into anything I wouldn't like.

Susan Erickson said...

don't eat it....now I never will! That vein thing really grosses me out. Would you like a vein with your fries? chewy!

JUNKER JANE said...

omg
I think I love if I already didn't...hahaha.....I thought I was the only one.....:D

Ellie Grace said...

This is the exact reason as to why I no longer eat KFC... I was so excited to enjoy my Kentucky fried goodness when all of a sudden I realize something funny is in my mouth... I spit it out. Brain.
There was a damn chicken BRAIN in my chicken wing. You can imagine my freak out. I have yet to eat there since.

I chomp it down, but where do you stand on these matters? Do tell, pleeeaaase!

Kitty Stampede said...

OH FUCK! You totally just made me gag, and i'm salivating, seriously.
shit.
i like the shit but i think you might of ruined it for me, that's a good thing though...thank you...hahaha...
trying to eat better so i need to be sicked out by bad food like that.

my mother in law bought some eggs at walmart ( i know,gag)...and she cracked an egg ready to scramble some up and their was a dead chick...WTF!!!?!? I woulda freaked and puked all over the place, family guy style.

Pretty Little World said...

I don't eat meat, but when I did, I always picked at it - just one teeny piece of something chewy or grisly, and the whole meal is ruined, ruined, ruined.

TK Kerouac said...

I'll never be able to eat a chicken leg again:)

i'm an inspector of all my food, especially chicken. this is why i never eat chicken sandwiches. i have to cut it up and make sure i'm not getting anything nasty. ewww.

Jessica said...

Omg you to. My father would say I looked like I was performing an autopsy.

Claire Kiefer said...

The fact that they actually contain veins and cartilage? Two of many reasons I don't eat meat. UGHHHHH.
