The word "don't" is one the first words we learn in life.  It is such a bossy term, and many times it has  such bad connotations.  It is one of those words that most of us would rather say than hear.  But sometimes I wonder how effective it is, particularly to those of us that have a contrarian spirit.  At the ripe old age of 40, I still cannot stand being told what to do, and the word "don't" usually makes me roll my eyes or feel resentful. But maybe that is just me. :)

In a lot of the child psychology classes I am taking we are told to never use don't or no with the kids...Even at the preschool we never use don't or no...We say "That is not OK" and explain why it is not Ok...

Amen. Tell me not to do something just makes me want to do it. :)

TOTALLY!!!!!
loved this post. It reminds me of a couple bosses I had but instead of saying "Don't", they put signs up EVERYWHERE. Saying Don't open door etc etc. It drove me batty and made me so bitter. That is why working for yourself would be amazing, not dealing with super anal people that treat their staff like children.

I'm not a fan of the don'ts either...unless it's don't eat that last cookie...that's mine.

HA very smart !
I have to admit I am very controlling and use the word a lot. But I haTE it when it's for me.

Don't be using that word with me, missy... hahahahaha!

Don't is akin to someone shushing me. Which makes me want to smack you. So no, you are not alone.

you know what...it's posts like these that make me realize how smart you are.

the word "don't" is a negative so of course i don't like hearing it. however, i will whore that word out like michael lohan whores his daughters.

Oh man, Lindsay looks so terrifying in that last picture. :( It's true that we say "don't" to little ones all the time, and God knows I say it to my students! Like on repeat. Don't be a freakin' pest. Don't lean back in your chair, lest you crack your head open. Don't you dare text in my class! Don't say "your grandma's so ghetto she's got weed in her wig" to the person sitting next to you (I obviously am quoting that verbatim from 5th period last week). Man oh man.

one of my major weaknesses - you can ask me something and i will give you the shirt off my back, but tell me...and it raises my hackels.

This is so me! Anytime someone says don't then I just do it anyway. That's what I was known for in my college dance company. They said don't cut my hair do I did it anyway. But, really, please don't shoot the puppy.

I know what you mean, although I like the "Don't even reply" & "don't cry".

What I really can't stand is being told to "calm down". That just makes me want to pop.

lol I love this. Pep once got a fortune cookie {fortune} that said DON'T PANIC ...THAT'S IT!!! ...and of course, we panicked. lol

Normally I hate the word don't, unless it is one of my bosses saying "don't worry about taking care of...I'll do myself". I actually have a bigger issue w/ DO. As an executive assistant to 4 guys all day long I hear Brandi DO this, Brandi DO that....drives me nuts.

it's a nasty word...if somebody yells it, it really pisses me off. Why don't people say, do, do......

Agreed, don't tell me what not to do!

Maybe it's just being born in the late 60s spirit, but DON'T still brings out immediate defiancy in me. But perhaps I'm still stuck at the mental age of 2...

Also if we are told 'don't...' we immediately focus on the act we shouldn't do - Like 'don't think of the big white elephant' Bang! There it is in your brain.

Do you notice that once someone tells you 'don't' you always want to 'do'? You're like 'whatever, what's the worst that can happen? Pleeese'

i was telling my colleague and sil the first word children really learnt is 'no'. i always think it's an asian thing. so much negativism. killjoy. and mothers learnt this from mothers. many times me and my sil had to tell my ma not to say certain words to the baby. i really think that she understands every single word like an adult does. words have power indeed.

Gonna flip things around, here.

"Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin' "

Following on from the posts about children, definitely we avoid 'don't'. It's much better to tell them what the CAN do rather than what they can't. Those are positive statements. Instead of 'don't run' you would say 'please walk'. Makes a heck of a difference, as someone mentioned if you say 'don't' they barely here the don't, and instead just hear the word after it, especially when they are just learning language.

I hadn't thought about it but you are absolutely right. This word is used everywhere and we don't even notice it. See, there it is again! - G
