Flu Shots

Dude. 'Tis the season.  They are marketing the flu shots like mad this year. Everywhere you turn you see or hear reminders that it is TIME TO GET A FLU SHOT.

Maybe I have seen too many episodes of The X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, The Twilight Zone and movies like COMA and Soylent Green, and as a result I am paranoid suspicious of authority!   I am not down with flu shots. I take my chances. I totally understand why the young, the old, and the unhealthy/at-risk crowd get these shots.  But I don't.  That might sound dumb/uneducated/silly/stupid, but mass inoculation(s) gives me the heebie jeebies.

Do you? Don't you? Thoughts?

I don't do them either... it might be a good idea for some or most people, but I'm not buying it.

dude: no freekin' way. I have never had one, and plan to never get one. When did "getting a flu shot" become the norm? They can put anything they want in the dam syringe...anything. Experimental serum? Microchip tracking device? no thanks. I haven't had "the flu" in ages, so, yeah, I'm with you...I'll chance it!

I have had the flu three times this year and I still refuse. Yuck!

Clever girl.

You'll be safe from becoming a zombie.

Yes, I watched I Am Legend over the weekend.

Smart girl.

Well..
Ahem, my last shot was actually YELLOW FEVER shot.
I need it to travel to South American countries. I thought that had disappeared, apparently not.
Two year back I was doing voluntary work and got the flu shot.
I dont plan in getting it this year though.
I am keeping myself healthy by washing my hands like 10 times a day and running from coughing people.

I take my chances too, because the one time I got the shot, I literally came down with the flue the next day!

Caroline said...

Got it twice...both times, within days of the shot, I was the sickest I have ever been in my whole life! Haven't had the flu shot in like 10 years...knock wood...I have been cool.

I do. And anyone who wants to get near my kid better have gotten one too. The flu could very likely kill him.

not a bloody chance! I work on building up my immunity system and take precautions....NEVER will I allow the injection of foreign fluids into my arm.......it's a massive scam....Twilight zone indeed!

I'm with you. I'll take my damn chances.

I read that the H1N1 Vaccination is actually a virus that will wipe out the human population in like 5 years...Not sure I believe it...

SabinePsynopsis said...

Bah, flu shots don't make sense anyway. The virus changes so quickly that it's very likely that the jab can't protect you against the one that will finally attack. Never had one, don't think I will.

SabinePsynopsis said...

P.S. But the shots make a lot of money for the pharmaceutical companies... (no matter if they turn you into a zombie)

Kitty Stampede said...

Screw them. Everyone I have ever known that gets the flu shots gets deadly ill. I literally have not gotten the flu in years and never take them. you can protect yourself naturally through vitamin d and eating right.

I almost died numerous times after vaccinations when i was a kid, turning blue and major convulsions. it was obviously due to the shots. never again.

don't know if you know Dr.Mercola or not, but I subscribe to his newsletters and he is dead against them. he is such a bad ass going all against establishment..hehehe.

So no way. I agree, there is something not right about it, especially the brain washing part and how it seems so urgent.
i would rather be responsible for my own health, thank you.

We are debating this issue. The schools are to the point where they are demanding that our children receive the shot...

Lynn said...

I have been getting them for years (starting when I was teaching school-they sneeze on everyone!)
I get them now because I'm fucking old!! BUT I am not a zombie yet!

That I know of.

i never get one.
i'm with you!!

design traveller said...

I'm not getting them.. lot's of garlic and I'm ok!

Kelly said...

You and your readers may have changed my mine. I get them but every year I feel like crapola after... They offer them at work and I feel like the odd man out by not doing it. I wonder if it depends on where you live and the people that you can come in contact with.... Boston/Cold/Lots of Public Transportation = Grossness everywhere.

Seriously thinking now if I am controlled by big brother! Oh no, I am becoming a freak - maybe it is all the shots.

beachbungalow8 said...

wash your hands before you touch any part of your face. No shot needed.

As an asthmatic, I get my flu shot every year. I was hospitalized with the flu about five years ago and it was no picnic.

That having been said, I am uncomfortable with the Walgreens and CVS stores of the world advertising "Flu shots! Every day!" How safe are they, really? The only flu shots I really trust are from my doctor's office.

Marsi @ The Cottage Cheese said...

I don't get them either. I got one flu shot, probably 10-12 years ago, and was really sick for days afterward. I hear it's common to experience "very mild" symptoms, but I actually got the damn flu from the flu shot. Plus, needles make me faint (yeah, I'm a sissy). So I'm totally with you on this one.

Kathryn said...

I think they are bad because of the "big brother reason", but as they are overused, they just force the virus to adapt faster and become stronger. I am not saying never use them, but sparingly and only as needed.

What you have to keep in mind when you get a flu shot it that you are getting a weaker strain of a certain flu virus in order for you to build up anti-bodies hoping when it come around they are ready to fight off the full blown infection.

Another thing is that a flu shot is geared towards this season's most popular flu strain, which constantly evolves and adapts into a new, stronger flu strain that will become harder to fight off.

Having untrained professional giving them like candy at your local pharmacy might make the drug companies and drugstores rich, but in the long run we will all pay with our health as the flu evolves into a more deadly strain.

Meh, I have in the past and I haven't as well. In Canada it's free, so, what the hell - I'm not sure if it works or changes anything... but I HATE needles!! EEP!

I don't get the flu shot because I have asthma and it always affects me poorly. I get the flu as a result of getting the flu shot. How's that for fucking fair.

Claire Kiefer said...

They don't freak me out, but I don't get them unless there's a special reason to. The only time I've ever gotten a flu shot was last winter during the swine flu madness, cause I was babysitting all kinds of little babes and one of them GOT THE FREAKIN SWINE FLU. Otherwise, I take my chances. But not cause I think it's going to give me the disease or autism or whatever people fear.

i never get flu shots..lol

alissa said...

i am SO with you. i think its crazy and icky and id rather get the flu big and bad before sticking some of that jazz in my arm. no thank you mam

Christina In Wonderland said...

I don't do flu shots... mostly because my immune system is such crap anyway, that I usually end up getting whatever I'm supposed to be inoculated for. :(

No way.

creative kerfuffle said...

i don't normally get them either but they were giving them out at the hubs' office and they needed at least 25 people to do it so i did it.

Pretty Little World said...

I don't get them. Getting sick is crappy, but just by washing your hands and taking regular care of yourself, you're probably just as likely to stay well.

Slices of Beauty... said...

Have never had one too, can't stand them needles, lol.

Hope your week is wonderful so far.

Georgina Dollface said...

I got the H1N1 flu shot last year because of all the hype, but I don't think I will get the seasonal flu shot this year. -G
BTW - I have an imaginary pain in my arm now, just from looking at the photo! Ouch!

Connie @ SogniESorrisi said...

I've never gotten a flu shot.

bananas. said...

i was like you until a couple years ago when i got the flu and i got it bad. since then i get the shot annually and i'm still here, alive and kicking.

but i think it's a personal choice. i don't know how much these shots work but it psyches me in a good way so i guess i'll keep doing it.

Miss Absinthe said...

Never do them. I choose to keep my immune system strong and if I get sick, I treat it naturally. Haven't been to a doctor in over 7 years and I'm continually researching natural and holistic cures. You simply cannot trust the gov't or the medical establishment when all they care about is $, not the health of the people.

Stay Well!!!

Felicia said...

I get one every year. I would honestly rather die from a flu shot than actually get the flu. The flu is TERRIBLE!!!!

Kristine said...

Never ever ever. I am too paranoid and I would rather get the flu than inject a bunch of crap in my arm. Everyone I know who gets the shot always ends up being the sickly one. No thank you!!!

rach said...

I am all about the flu shots. Although i had mine last year and I got the swine flu instead of the regular flu. fail. They dont really give out flu shots here like they do in the states. Its mostly babies and old people who get them. Oh well, fingers crossed for no flu this year! And if there was mind control meds in that medicene I think the mind control in the water might cancel them out. har har.

You know the whole story behind a flu shot, right? In case you don't, here goes! They shoot you with the flu doctors believe will be the most popular. you have a slim chance of getting THAT particular flu out of all the ones they have. So then what happens is you're immune system is shot with mega power but when you do sick (and not just with the flu, but with say the common cold) you are SCREWED. your immune system is fighting so hard to wait for that certain flu, it fails at other things. phew!
if you knew this already, my apologies, i try to tell people what they are getting themselves into.
