Afro Envy

I saw a kid the other day with a gigantic afro. He was so proud, walking around in front of his high school with his hair swaying in the breeze. It was mesmerizing. And for a minute I was so envious, and I was reminded of a conversation I had with my hairdresser when I was a teenager. I gave my hair stylist a picture of a woman with a gigantic afro and I said, "I WANT YOU TO MAKE MY HAIR LOOK LIKE THIS." And my hairdresser took me by the shoulders, looked me in the eyes, and said, "You are white. You have stick-straight hair. Your hair will NEVER EVER look like this." I was crushed!

Blonde afroI had this kid sign the consent form right before he crapped his pants.

Is there a problem, officer?

That first picture is sensational. I've always said if I was black, I would SO go the 'fro route. They're just so awesome looking. I guess you can get a wig just for fun, if only to wear around the house :)

Damn girl. You got me wishin I was rocking a fluffy fro right now. It is sad we may never have this because I also have stick straight hair. But if Maegan can do it so can we! Foam curlers to the rescue!x

There really isn't much cuter in the world than little babies with afros. The ones here are the cutest ever. I understand your desire for one! They look incredible, but I bet they're a bear to maintain . . .

funny how we always like what we don't have....all the young white girls in my town are into dreads and it just isn't the right vibe for them....really....

You are White ;)

lololololol - the last one is superb.

I'm in love with afros AND this post!!!

oh you poor thing! dreams can always come true if you put in enough work, or in your case, lots of perms, hairspray & teasing. :) i saw a family of 4 at the silverlake farmer's market this saturday who all had huge afros - mom, dad, and two little girls {maybe 5 and 9 years old}. it was awesome!

This is my bf's fave style. Too bad I also have stick straight fine limp hair. A spiral perm in the late 80s sure did the trick though! It was horrible but maybe exactly what you're looking for! ;)

Great topic and pictures to accompany it.

Don't discount the afro just because you're a cracker ... remember, a picked-out perm and a bunch of hair spray can create a pretty mean 'fro. Just think of the eighties.

I have a fro weakness like none other! I seriously think it's so beautiful on a woman and a man.

MAN! A very siilar thing happened to me! It's so unfair!! But! I bought a revlon ceramic hair waver, it was like twenty bucks, and you know it is the ONLY thing that will curl my hair! And with a pick a tad bi of hair spray i got pretty close to a fro! Try it out:)

Y'know even just insanely curly hair would do, TWO of my best friends have it. It's infuriating. They just wash, serum and go. RAGE!

I with ya sista! and I almost did this very same post before..lol...I SWEAR!?! I just ADORE Fros!!! I seen a white girl that had a crazy fro before, obviously she had crazy curls to begin with...and I don't, so it's not possible. I have pretty stick straight hair too. You always want what ya don't have, I suppose. I just love the look. The drummer for Lenny Kravitz rocks the fro HARD!

My favorite 'do ever was a very curly perm. Wish I could have kept it up! http://wendybrandes.com/blog/2009/03/favorite-hair/

it makes such a statement - i dont blame you for wanting one!

Kristine said...

Sigh. I have flat beyond flat hair.I'd love a fro. I'd have the biggest fro ever if I could.

There's always perms, right?

The hairstyle looks best on them, fits them well. Is it still called Afro if white people do such hairstyle?

Ties in nicely with the afro theme, plus I really want to read it!

Fros really are awesome, that is a fact and I was happy to see that you still managed to sneak a couple white fros so there is hope!
I just stumbled onto your blog and find it very interesting. I like the way you associate images and I really like the photo essays by other photographers as well.
I'll be back regularly and would love for you to have a look at the blog I have been working on.

Those pictures are awesome! I once experimented with a perm to try and get that same effect but alas...well, you could just imagine the rest.

GET A WIG. And don't let anyone tell you you can't.
YOU CAN HAVE AN AFRO .

i had one after a bad perm in the 80's...it was not a pretty time.

Are we related? I swear I had the same convo with my hair person...and I tried it again last month. You'd think in 20 years they'd have come up with something to give white girls a taste of the 'fro. I live with envy in my heart. Yes, I admit it.

Japanese people mange to have Jafros...I'm sure you could do it if you really tried. Worst thing that could happen is all your hair falls out. It would grow back (probably).

funny i spent the vast majority of my life, putting a Relaxer in my afro textured hair to make it pin straight. grass is always greener, lol... i cut all the relaxer out 2 years ago and have a baby afro now!
