Brick House

I live in shake-and-bake territory (Los Angeles), so I hardly ever see anything made out of brick around here. When I happen to spot a brick home, I usually get pretty excited. What about you? Like it? Hate it? Too old and stodgy for you? Just curious.

When I first moved to the UK I was amazed and took photos of everything because it's all made out of brick or stone. Just seems like the houses have character and a good story behind them.

Love them! I've adored brick houses ever since the three little piggies outsmarted that big bad wolf! - G

I would love a brick house!! I think it's the prettiest siding, but there aren't a ton of brick houses in MN. I went to Memphis and it seemed like all the house there, even the new ones, were brick - i loved it!

XOXO

Oh, this girl loves herself some brick houses. I like to think they are indestructible...and that I'm living in a castle of some sort

I like the bricks that are not pristine with sharp edges. I like the non-formal looking brick houses. You got some nice photos.

I'm surprised it's such a rarity out there. I'm in the South so they're everywhere. The first house is kinda like my parents'. My dad built it after ski lodge plans.
I love them - strong in the face of a disaster, energy efficient and some look so much like castles!

i love brick houses (i also love Brick House by the Commodores) and i'm with you, there aren't enough of them here in southern CA. i would gladly trade all the stucco, santa fe style houses for brick any day.

I like gingerbread, and frosting too.

I'm from SF, not much brick left there. I was horrified when I moved here to southern AZ and saw all the brick houses. I was like, you are all gonna die when the ground shakes! I love the clay huge clay bricks of adobe.

I love brick houses, and I always will.

So funny, they really are so rare and I hadn't thought about it till now. I can't think of any brick houses here in SF (though they are aplenty in Georgia, where I grew up). I like them!

almost all the houses in Houston have brick somewhere...might not be all 4 sides, but there is always some brick. the stucco i was so used to in southern California looks incredibly out of place, and even kind of sterile, here.

i love all things brick/stone...i want a stone archway in my next house. and yes, i said IN!

haha!

Is it bad that I started singing, "She's a brick house..."?
Yes. I do love brick. More building should be made of brick.

I loved all these images...the houses are so charming :) As I'm from SF I don't see so many as many are not earthquake proof...lol.

some of those are amazing! but i've never been interested in living in a brick house. now a loft with brick interiors? YES! otherwise, i'm totally a little wooden bungalow kind of girl.

I love those kinds of homes. I picture a super clean & modern/transitional interior with lots of great architecture to provide the character. Yep, I'd live there...

I love brick houses. Stone houses, too. I always wanted one with a whole bunch of ivy growing up the side.

Brick houses are a treat, aren't they? They are the closest things architects use that looks like a graham cracker.

By the way, the song is now in my head. "She's a brick... house...!"

(Hi Sis/Tulp)

I love brick houses. We had plans to build a brick bungalow when I was married. Didn't work out, but it would have been a sweet little house.

Love your images and really love the thatched roof one!

brick is adorable!! I really think it has such a gorgeous element to it. There's a nice area in Portland that is full of brick homes and it's so much fun to peruse.

ugh, I love them! There is one lonely brick house I see in Beverly Hills ...and by house, I mean MANSION that is amazing ...the brick is sort of washed out. I love it. Besides the Spanish houses I dream of, it's really the only other one I look at every time I drive by.

My fave on here is that droopy black roofed one. Love it!

i'm with you lady...love LOVE brick houses!!! they look like east coast ivy league schools so i wouldn't mind living in one with gargoyles. gotta have gargoyles.

It's bricks, bricks, bricks all around where I live, and I love it. The straw roof is a tiny bit too kitschy for me (but they do exist here, too).

I'll take #15 in the middle. Typically I'm not crazy about brick houses, and I grew up in one.

I just wonder what images first came up when you Googled "brick house."
HAHAHAHA!
And now because of your post, I realize how I never see brick houses here in L.A. After 15 years here, I'm just NOW realizing it. Thank you for turning on the light in my dim head!

I noticed the same thing as Katie when I moved to the UK some years ago. I come from south Louisiana where a lot of homes are wooden and raised on pillars due to the flooding issues we have. These homes are lovely and have character and are distinctive, unlike the cookie-cutter homes we see going up over a few days in neighborhoods now.
