Not Exactly Romantic

pepe-le-pew-the-skunk-cartoon-885

I have been dating a man for a little bit. Sometimes he says really sweet and nice things to me. He is kind of romantic. And me?  Romantic?  Not exactly.  I think it has become pretty clear to him that I am not so much the romantic type, and that I say a lot of stupid stuff without thinking. Two examples:

On our first date:
He said: "Mmmmm. You smell so good. Do you always smell this good?"
I said: "Only on the days that I shower."

Poor guy. I am sure he doesn't know what to think of me.

A more recent example:
He texted: "I think of you and your laugh all the time. The thought gets me smiling."
I texted back: "Barf."

I could give more examples, but I think I am too embarrassed to do so. Maybe that means I am learning and I will curb what I say? Maybe. But doubtful.

WEll... if (!) he keeps on dating you, it might be true love, or ? If a romantic man eats your comments, he must be ear-high in love....

Morgan said...

Agree with Martina... the man is dating you, even after you text rejected his sentiment so he must like what you're doing. :)

Hilarious!

Good for you, staying true to who you are. Now he can't ever say "you dont ever send me schmoopie texts anymore."

Though often, people express themselves in the ways that they want people to show affection back to them.

I'm the same way! I always think dudes who write poetry to girls are super barf-worthy too.

Hahahahahah! You're such a dork!!! This really cracks me up.

He is a romantic - the issue is if you like it.

I think your answer on your first date was hilarious!
But the "BARF" was too much !
IT was a TEXT !! you had time to think it over...
Then again what are you suppose to answer ?
"I smell like this when I go on first dates?"
or
"Oh I think about you all the time too and smile"

Too me it's just dorky. Thinking of it, I very likely would answer the same thing.

BARF!!! Ahh haha that's the best... I'm going to text that to my husband next time he says something nice to me

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I love that. I am exactly like that... my husband calls me beautiful and I'm like "You're mom is beautiful". Who gives a "your mom" joke in response to a romantic sentiment? ME!

He sounds sweet. Any man who has nice things to say and is thinking about you and not taking advantage is worthy of a woman's attention. The mere fact that he hasn't felt dejected and moved on is clearly a good sign. No need to give false pretense. If that is how he is and you accept and are okay with it and vice versa, than all is well is Droll Girls Romantic Barf-filled World. You go !!

We are so kindred spirits! When people become either super lovey or clingy and I freak out. Like majorly. lol. My best friend and her boyfriend are unbelievably lovey dovey and I always give them shit for it. Mushy mushy. I'm very much the polar opposite of that. Haha, I completely understand!

Much Love

Oh my gosh, this is so funny!!! You sound like me- I'm not much of the romantic type either. My sister put some mushy crap on her facebook about her boyfriend and I commented, "I think I just threw up a little" so your barf text killed me!

ahahahahahahahhaha I love it... I love the image you chose as well. lol BARF.

That picture is so great!
I did the exact same thing to my bf of almost 3 years now!
I had been through so much crap and everything he said to me... well... I figured it was bullshit and I let him know. He proved me wrong! ;)

Remember that SATC episode when Carrie couldn't deal with Petrovsky's "romance?" We are who are and I bet he likes you for who you are! xoxo

The real question is:
do you like the romantic quips or does it really make you cringe?
If you deep down like it but just don't know how to respond because you don't feel worthy; that's one thing.
If you deep down just don't like them from him; tell him to either knock it off or hit the road.
I'm not a shrink, I just play one on blog comments.

I would love you exactly for this! Who wants a soppy romantic girl anyway?!?

Phoenix said...

So, is this a vulnerability thing or a lack of tolerance towards other people's saccharine comments? I think if you're feeling vulnerable about it maybe you should at least speak and let the guy know that it's your quirky and adorable defense mechanism so he doesn't just assume you're making fun of him all the time.

If you really don't like romantic gestures, sounds like he might not be the one for you!

awwww that's kinda cute actually!

this is probably one of the reasons he likes you so much. just sayin.

barf... awesome response. don't ever curb what you say. barf is actually way cooler than sappy cheesy romance stuff anyway.

Aww he likes you, barfs and all!

I am somewhat the same but my husband has made me more romantic (so you never know!)

Just keep being your adorable barfy self, sounds like he likes you just as you are and you don't want to be a fake you. ( although this is coming from a huge sap who loves all the mushy barfy stuff)

Kaz said...

I do the same. I have a theory about it...I think we're not used to someone being nice to, or about us, so we don't recognise it for what it is.

Many times I will think back to what a guy has said or done, and only then realise that it was incredibly sweet or caring. But at the time, I didn't respond to it as such.

This old theory of mine may only work for me...but I truly believe that many of us don't experience romantic and caring things enough. Kinda sad really :)

cerebral e said...

Haha. I am the same too.

LOLOL...Awesome...you tell it like it is, sista! That is too funny. I would roll if someone said that back to me if I said something sweet and/or romantic...which I don't really do.
how did he respond to that?!!?

Happy Weekend!!!!!!!!!!!! oh man. can't wait to sleep in.

hahaha! im kinda like u! romance makes me squirm. lol

aww, he sounds quite sweet! i agree with anita and phoenix: maybe you're just not used to compliments and blurt out the first thing that comes into your head.
it seems like you kinda feel bad for being so abrupt with him, maybe you should start enjoying his niceness, why not? i bet you DO smell good AND have a great laugh! yay drollgirl!!

Barf!

I love that... I'm like you, when men say cute/romantic stuff I think it's lame and fake and I don't even know what to say to it? Because it's dumb. I'll be single forever maybe? :)

Kellie said...

So funny! We are same! :) I am SO not romantic. Romantic movies are ok once in a while, but romance from me? Not gonna happen. I just find it too cheesy.

Punctuation Mark said...

i am not romantic at all either... actually the complete opposite... don't worry about it! he'll get used to it... remember to have fun!

only on days that i shower. i love that. i battle being too literal and truthful. rhetorical shit (thumbs down)

my favorite childhood cartoon... It's true, the more grown up I'm supposed to be, the more I tend to revert to behaving like a kid.
